The UN General Assembly approved to proclaim 2017 International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. The resolution, adopted on December 4, notes “the importance attached to international tourism, especially the proclamation of an International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, in terms of promoting understanding among all peoples, to learn about the rich heritage of various civilizations and to better appreciate the values ​​inherent to different cultures, thus contributing to strengthening peace in the world “.
“The fact that the UN has declared 2017 International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development represents a unique opportunity to increase the contribution of tourism to the three pillars of sustainability, economic, social and environmental, all in drawing attention to the true dimensions of a sector that is often undervalued, “said the Secretary General of UNWTO, Taleb Rifai, adding:” As the United Nations lead agency for this initiative, UNWTO wait to start organizing and implementing this International Year, in collaboration with Governments, relevant UN organizations, other international and regional organizations and all interested stakeholders. ”
This follows the recognition by world leaders at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio + 20), a “well designed and organized tourism” can contribute to sustainable development in its three dimensions, to create jobs and business opportunities.
The decision to proclaim 2017 International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development comes at a particularly important moment, when the international community embraces the new sustainable development program in 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) approved by the United Nations General Assembly last September. Tourism is one of the targets of three of SDO, that SDO 8: Promoting sustained economic growth, shared and sustainable, full and productive employment and decent work for all; ODD 12: Establish sustainable consumption and production; and ODD 14: Conserve and sustainably exploit the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
